Anna Espelt "Pla de Gates" Blanc 2022

Eye-catching bright gold hue, incredibly clean and crisp on the palate with hints of tangy white peach, lemon zest, green melon and a hint of spice. The flinty and herbaceous notes are rounded out by an almond honey and floral finish. A beautiful expression of a Garnacha Blanca blend. A refreshing, easy drinking wine.

A blend of Lledoner Blanc and Roig (Grenache Blanc and Gris) that Anna Espelt grows in her Mas Marés vineyard. Having gained experience with these varieties further inland where the climate is warmer, Anna has discovered that they really shine closer to the Mediterranean, where nearly constant winds result in smaller clusters, berries, thicker skins, and fresher acidity. Pla de Gates is cooled overnight after harvesting by hand, is partially destemmed and sees a short maceration before a long gentle pressing. Aged for 9 months in neutral 500L and 20HL French oak barrels.

Anna Espelt has been working with her family wine estate for years but most recently started her own label focused on vineyards within the Cap de Creus Nature Reserve of Spain. Anna states that "is is a land of granite, wine, blue skies, and the smell of wild herbs and sea spray," and has found these varietals thrive closer to the coast, where the winds keep the berries small and skins thick, leading to the preservation of natural acidity.
