Brood Fermentation "Nuka" Rosé 2023
A damn fine rosé/orange wine mash-up made from a blend of Pinot Noir and blush Pinot Gris. Confectionary and red-fruited on the nose, with rose-like tropical fruits, rhubarb and spices on the pallet. Nice weight and density, with a satisfying grip on the finish.
The Pinot Gris is given four days on skins, while the Pinot Noir is carbonically macerated. The fruit is organically grown without irrigation, and the wine is bottled without filtration or fining.
"Nuka" is named after all of the Manuka trees in the Brood vineyard. The Manuka tree is famous for its flowers, which are used to produce Manuka honey.
"Brood" is a beekeeping term for the part of a hive where life is regenerating. "Fermentation" is an incredible, natural process of chemical change. Putting the two words together already evokes a lot. Winemakers Lauren Yap and Jim Brown collectively worked across the beer, wine, hop and malt industries for 10+ years and have now landed in the rich fruit basket that is Nelson, New Zealand. They dry farm their own organic vineyard with biodynamic practices and make minimal intervention wine.
