Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" 2023
Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" is a powerful and complex wine that highlights the exceptional qualities of the Morgon appellation. With its intense fruit flavors, structured palate and long finish, this wine offers a profound expression of Beaujolais and is ideal for both immediate enjoyment and aging potential.
A deep garnet color with hints of purple, the nose is rich and layered, with intense aromas of black cherries, blackberries, and plums, intertwined with notes of licorice, earth, and a touch of smokiness. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured, with a perfect balance of ripe fruit, vibrant acidity, and firm tannins. The dark fruit flavors are concentrated and robust, with additional layers of spices, leather, and a hint of minerality. The finish is long and satisfying, with a persistent note of dark berries and subtle earthy undertones.
Guy Breton, a respected figure in Beaujolais, crafts this wine with a dedication to traditional and natural winemaking methods. The vineyard is planted with old Gamay vines averaging over 60 years of age. These old vines produce low yields of concentrated fruit, contributing to the wine's depth and complexity.
The 2023 vintage benefited from excellent weather conditions, resulting in grapes with perfect ripeness and balance. The winemaking process involves semi-carbonic maceration to enhance the fruit's vibrancy and maintain its natural freshness. The wine is aged in old French oak barrels for 8-10 months, allowing it to develop additional complexity and structure.
Leave it to Breton to take summer heat and turn it into a light summer breeze in a glass. No matter the elements, Breton always manages to bring out the best in his Gamay. His guiding principle is simply to make wine he wants to drink. I’m pretty sure you’ll want to as well. Joyous, silky, and smooth.
