Manzone Barolo Gramolere DOCG 2019
"The 2019 Barolo Gramolere is a brilliant, classically austere wine that will delight readers who enjoy linear, taut Barolos. All the elements are so well balanced. Crushed flowers, mint, pine, spice and lavender are some of the many notes that grace this ethereal but deep, super-expressive Barolo." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2023 (VN 95)
"With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the Manzone 2019 Barolo Gramolere offers a combination of plump redcurrant and sweet oak spice. You taste the fruit and the winemaking, and both sides of this Barolo are delivered with good intensity. Ultimately, aromas from the oak aging supersede those of the fruit, and you are left with a dry mouthfeel and toasted flavors. The tannins are dry and smooth." - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2024 (WA 91)
"Ripe and inviting, this has aromas of cloves, walnuts, tobacco, mocha and spiced cherries. It’s full-bodied with well-integrated and ripe tannins. Lovely creamy character. Drink or hold." - James Suckling
A full and balanced red wine, made from Nebbiolo grapes handled and vinified by Manzone Giovanni in Langhe. The grapes come from a single vineyard, in the Gramolere MGA, in Monforte d’Alba, on vines are about 35 years old. Growing in sandy soil rich in stones and fossils with south-southwest exposure, the steep slope of the hill only allows manual processing.
Harvested by hand in mid- to late-October to ensure the perfect ripening of the grapes. Natural fermentation with the skins lasts 30-40 days, with soft pumping over to guarantee a delicate polyphenolic extraction. Aged three years in barrels, followed by a few months rest in concrete tanks, the wine is bottled during waning moon.
The first vintage was produced in 1971. Only a few thousand bottles of Barolo Gramolere are produced and sold about five years after the harvest.
