Occhipinti "SP68" Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2024
Named for the road near winemaker Arianna Occhipinti's home vineyard in Vittoria, "SP68" Rosso exhibits a slightly purple-red hue in the glass and offers aromas of flowers, leather, smoke, spice, herbs, licorice, earth and mandarin rind. On the palate, medium-bodied, dry, notes of wild cherries, plum, mulberry and a touch of raspberry lift, leading to a soft, fresh and persistent finish with minerals, spice, and violet.
70% Frappato, 30% Nero d'Avola from certified-organic estate vines averaging 20+ years old and planted on chalky, sandy soils. The bunches are harvested by hand, destemmed and co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in concrete tanks. Maceration lasts approximately two weeks. The wine is aged in concrete tanks for six months and bottled unfiltered. Sulfur use is modest. "SP68" is the Strada Provinciale 68, the country road on which the Occhipinti winery and home vineyard lie.
Winemaker Arianna Occhipinti is the niece of Guisto Occhipinti whose COS wines have been stuff of legend in Sicily. Following her uncle's footsteps, Arianna makes some of the best wine in the area, arguably in all of Italy. The "natural woman" of Italian wine, Occhipinti started this fantastic project in 2004, after finishing her studies as a winemaker in Milan, applying biodynamic farming principles since the very beginning for a more eco-conscious and authentic approach to local grape varietals. "Siccagno" is her interpretation of Nero D’Avola and it represents the enchanting land where it is produced: wild, intense, gentle, passionate, warm and full of contrasts.
As one of the most influential voices in the natural wine movement, Arianna has brought the Sicilian grape varieties to new heights. Her wines reflect the subtle nuances of the various terroirs. Occhipinti stands for a scientifically sound, yet natural approach that characterises the wine world far beyond Sicily.
