It comes from nine hectares of estate vines, planted from 1956 to 2005 on the flat, sunny, well-drained Camp Rotaliano plateau right around the winery. The soils are a range of alluvial sand and gravel and feature Dolomitic limestone. Older vines are trained traditionally in pergola; younger vines are trained on wires in guyot. The farming is certified-biodynamic. There are 15 separate parcels, all hand-harvested and vinified separately. The bunches are partly destemmed and partly left intact, depending on the vintage; the uncrushed berries and the whole clusters are layered in cement tanks, where they ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and no sulfur. The classic elements of Northern Rhone Syrah, dark red fruits and savory elements of bacon fat are present, but they are subtle in comparison with the floral aromas jumping out of the glass. Clos de Cessieux is Hervé’s most exuberant — one might say hedonistic — wine.

Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified traditionally, without destemming. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats for nearly 3 weeks, with punch-downs and daily foot treading. Aged on the lees in second-hand Burgundy barrels for 8 months. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, with a small amount of SO2 added at bottling depending on the vintage.

Hervé Souhaut created Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet in 1993. Hervé works 5-hectares of old and ancient vines—between 50 to 100 years old. He is very fortunate to own two vineyards in the Rhône Valley just opposite the storied hills of Hermitage in Saint Joseph. This region is widely recognized as being one of the finest areas for wine production on the planet; thanks in part to its elevation, ancient vineyard sites, and southeastern and southern exposures. The domaine is located further into the hills of the Northern Ardeche in the tiny town of Arlebosc, about a 30-minute drive, winding through the hills from St Joseph. The winery is underneath the 16th century “les romaneaux” fortified farm and sits in the middle of the vines that make up the Souteronne, Syrah, and white cuvées.

Hervé works entirely on whole grape bunches and semi-carbonic maceration. His philosophy is to extract a delicate balance of tannins from the grapes, to make a wine with subtlety and finesse. This stands in contrast to many of the storied wines of the Northern Rhone that are made with much more extraction of tannin, where they are designed to be practically undrinkable in their youth, as time is needed for them to soften and open up. Hervé prefers to make a wine that is drinkable right away, but we must say his wines have such a fantastic level of purity and acidity, that the older bottles we have tasted have incredible potential to evolve into what we find to be one of the most spectacular natural wines in existence.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0898/2931/0781/files/Domaine-Romaneaux-Destezet-Souhaut-Clos-de-Cessieux-Saint-Joseph-2023.jpg?v=1732593121
bodegas-ponce-clos-lojen-bobal-2023
Bodegas & Viñedos Ponce "Clos Lojen" Bobal 2023

This is such a lovely and unique Spanish red. He is one of Spain's leading lights amongst a new, younger set of vignerons who pair their vineyard knowledge with serious discipline and curiosity in the cellar, often borrowing techniques from the north of the border, where their influences are more likely to reside in the Loire, Beaujolais and Burgundy than in Bordeaux. It's quite fruit-driven and has a moderate 12.5% alcohol and good freshness. Raspberries and blackberries balanced with savory notes. Deep ruby color, some purple. Pronounced nose with deep fruit up front, dark red berries and cherries, cinnamon spice, sweeter violet pastilles and a present core of minerality.
