Filadoro Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2022
This Fiano di Avellino from the small Lapio Filadoro winery in Campania leads with aromas of pear, ripe melon and orange. The palate brings floral ripe melon and stone fruit to the fore, with more savory flavors of almond, hazelnut, grass and cheese providing balance and an attractive ripe fruit finish. Medium-bodied, rich and enjoyable.
While Fiano has spread to other areas, including Sicily, the hilly district of Irpinia, the ancient name for the inland geographic area that comprises the Apennine Mountains around the town of Avellino, is the grape’s spiritual home. Fiano excels in this environment, thanks to the high amount of rainfall, marked differences between day and night temperatures, volcanic soil and clay deposits. Here, Fiano produces more mineral-driven versions that possess good aging potential.
The connection between Filadoro and agriculture is ancient. Although many of the current vineyards were planted by Giuseppa Filadoro and Pietrantonio Lepore in the early 1990s, they never abandoned agriculture and the production of their beloved Fiano, supplying the grapes to major producers but always retaining a portion for the family's own wine production.
In 2008, their sons Walter and Vittorio embarked on a project to enhance these family grapes, bringing their parents' dream to life and interpreting the Irpinia winemaking tradition in a modern way. This led to the creation of Filadoro Winery, which produces 20,000 bottles from company vineyards, divided into four labels: Fiano di Avellino DOCG, Greco di Tufo DOCG, Irpinia Aglianico DOC, and Taurasi DOCG.
