Most winemakers, however, find it maddeningly hard to vinify. This is a grape variety where each berry is loaded with monster piths that are easily squashed under the load of a traditional wine press or less than conscientious winemaking. The heavily-seeded grape needs a light hand with extraction In the hands of a master winemaker, however, the resulting wines are bright, high-tone and marked with very pretty aromas of wildflowers, roses, and sweet spice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLa Miraja is known within the region as a specialist in this variety, and they’ve learned over the years how to thread the needle of extracting flavor from the thin skins without the harsh tannins that the variety’s extra seeds can sometimes bring. Their bottling is marked by all the trappings of pure, concentrated Grignolino, and with distinct minerality to boot. They’re the best at what they do, but because the estate is absolutely microscopic, their bottles are exceptionally tough to come by. Only around 500 cases are produced annually.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNestled within the original castle of Castagnole Monferrato, La Miraja was constructed as an armory in the 11th century, only to be retrofitted as a cellar in the 1400s. In this armory-turnedcellar, Eugenio Gatti, a seventh-generation viticulturist, turns out Barbera, Grignolino, Freisa and his fabled Ruché. La Miraja (pronounced “me-rye-uh”) is tiny by any measure, comprising less than four hectares under vine. It is here that Eugenio devotes his life’s work to producing roughly 2,500 transcendent cases of wine each year.
