Ab Astris Texas Hill Country Estate Grown Tannat 2020
This 100% Tannat grown in Ab Astris' Estate Vineyard in the Texas Hill Country spent 32 months in American Oak. Opaque magenta in color, with a bouquet of dried black fruits, sage, dark chocolate, olive tapenade and baking spices on the nose. The palate offers blueberry, blackberry, smokey black pepper and black fruit with powerful tannins, nice acidity and a slight licorice finish.
Ab Astris is a family-owned and operated winery nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, crafting exceptional wines sourced from Texas-grown fruit. All of their wines are 100% Texas grown and made at their on-site production facility. They grow 12 acres of estate fruit at Ab Astris that the winemakers and owner tend to year round, and they source other fruit from reputable growers in the Hill Country and High Plains. Their winemakers strive to let the fruit tell the story of the terroir in which it came from, using minimal oak and keeping to a philosophy of aging a minimum of two years in barrel.
Ab Astris focuses on sustainable and organic-leaning farming practices, and works closely with experts on a "Roadmap to Sustainability in Texas Wine" project. They aim for environmental, social and economic sustainability in their vineyard, which includes planting cover crops for biodiversity and minimizing synthetic herbicides and pesticides.
This is the first vintage of Tannat released from the winery's estate vineyard. It recently took home gold at the San Francisco Chronicle International Wine Competition.
