Azienda Agricola COS "Nero Di Lupo" Nero d'Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2024
Nero di Lupo offers an aromatic bouquet of ripe raspberry, plums, dark cherry and blackberry, with a touch of earthy spice, a subtle hint of Mediterranean herbs and a whiff of struck match. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with velvety tannins and a vibrant freshness. The wine's mineral backbone provides a structured and elegant finish, which lingers with notes of dark fruit and a dash of black pepper. Savory, with almost briny aromas.
Crafted from 100% estate grown Nero d'Avola, this wine comes from the COS winery in Sicily, known for its organic and biodynamic viticulture. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts, ensuring a pure expression of the terroir. The wine is aged nine months in concrete vats, which preserves its fruit-forward character while allowing for subtle development of complexity, followed by another three months in bottle before release. Nero di Lupo is a wine that reflects both the rustic charm and the modern sophistication of Sicilian winemaking.
COS was founded in 1980 by three friends and legends in winemaking, Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Cirino Strano (the initials of their last names form the winery’s name), yet the winery itself dates to the 1880s. Sicily has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 8th century BCE when the Greeks first planted grapes in the eastern part of the Island. It is only more recently though that true top quality wines and winemaking have arrived there. It was through the hard work and dedication of producers such as COS who showed the potential of Sicily’s terroir and drew attention to the island, especially its ability to produce complex, pure and fresh wines, despite its location at the very southern tip of Italy.
