Martha Stoumen "Patatino" 2025
Patatino brings the refreshment, full stop. Aromas of hibiscus, fir and wild licorice, mingle with blood orange, bright raspberry, hibiscus, fir, wild licorice and leaf tea on the palate. A vibrant, chillable, nouveau-style California red perfect for when you’ve arrived at the afterparty, and you want a wine that doesn’t feel like wine. You want that wine to contain electrolytes, refresh the palate, and lift the soul. Patatino does two of those three things--no sports mix harmed.
A co-fermented blend of 35% Valdiguié, 29% Colombard, 23% Carignan and 12% secret field blend from the organic, dry-farmed Ricetti Vineyard in Mendocino County (vines planted in 1948). Given the Beaujolais Nouveau-style semi-carbonic maceration treatment in the cellar, which yields electric raspberry colors in the glass. 193 cases produced.
"Patatino" translates to "little potato" in Italian grandmother speak, a nickname for winemaker Martha Stoumen's son.
After eight years apprenticing around the world, Martha Stoumen set out as a self-funded, first generation winemaker to answer the question, “What does California taste like?” In her hot little corner of Northern California, Mediterranean grapes thrive and healthy vineyards allow her to create joyful balanced wines. Martha's wines are made from unexpected varietals and offer new takes on California classics. She does things the right way even if it's not the easy or cool way. Of the nearly two dozen wines she make every year, blends and flavors change but the desire to share the simple pleasures of natural wine remains the same.
