Monument Wine Co. "Daughter" Oregon Red Wine 2022
Baffling yet beautiful, Monument's Daughter carries a Pinot Noir-esqe nose and tastes similar to a high-end Cru Beaujolais, offering a refreshing, fruit-forward profile with notes of dusty red fruit, white pepper, tangy fruit leather and a fig bitten right off from the tree. It's bright, warm, and with just a hint of that je-ne-sais-quoi... a friendly electricity, crunchy, high-toned fruit, notes of black currant and light, powdery tannins. Enjoy with a slight chill on a warm afternoon.
Daughter is a low-intervention Oregon red blend of 80% Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley and 20% Syrah from Applegate Valley. As always, the grapes were hand-harvested and fermented whole-cluster with native yeasts. Aged in concrete, neutral barrel and stainless tank with minimal intervention. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, with no manipulations beyond total sulfur addition of 22pm.
Winemaker Tyler Magyar makes wine in a hard-to-find wine cave on the outskirts of Portland. He founded Monument after relocating from NYC to Oregon in 2015, first tinkering in friends' cellars and working with Andy Young of The Marigny / St. Reginald Parish. His approach is to make honest, thoughtful wines without adornment or cut corners. Of utmost importance is sincerity in everything from vineyard sources and vinification process to the visual aesthetic of the labels and the people he chooses to work with. While his wines are "natural" in the sense that they are farmed organically, fermented with native yeasts and have no additives, he hopes his wines will be enjoyed as much by your Mom as anything else. He produces under 500 cases per year.
