Magna Montis "Tupungato" Malbec 2022
Very juicy, with a nice grip, layers given by the profile of the soil, big tension in the middle of the mouth, crunchy fruit and a long elegant finish. A nose full of fruit like plum and cherries, flowers like violet and a touch of mineral notes like wet stones.
Winemaker Martin Dicuzzo started Magna Montis as a project to showcase the more refined and elegant side of Argentinian wine, and this extremely bright, juicy Malbec is a great example. It has an earthy, herbal nose with some notes of red plum and orange zest. The palate brings pops of blueberries and raspberries with refreshing acidity.
With this wine, Martin wanted to showcase the vibrant, fresh, and fruit driven side of Malbec. The fruit is grown at 3800 feet in Tupungato, one of the biggest departments in the Uco Valley with a diverse array of alluvial soils, crossed by many rivers and river beds. Wines from Tupungato tend to have very expressive aromas because of the sun exposure, and yet they are lighter bodied with much more skin and bone than muscle with an austere mid palate, depending on the soil composition.
Magna Montis means “Big Mountain” in Latin, referring to The Andes, the largest Continental Range in the world and home of their wines. In Argentina altitude is one of their trademarks, however, Magna Montis values the importance of each of the players in the Ecosystem as well, meaning that their interpretation of the place will give a unique style to their wines.
Their philosophy is to make the wines they consider that show a place in particular vintage, making a yearly challenge without loosing the joy. They are fascinated with the fact that each year is a new opportunity to show different expression of the same place.
Grapes are hand picked and then brought into the cellar for spontaneous fermentation. About 80% of the grapes are de-stemmed and sent to stainless, along with the remaining 20% whole clusters. Cold maceration takes 20 days, with one soft punch down per day. When alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine is pressed off the skins and sent to concrete tanks for one year of aging. It is gently fined and filtered to preserve freshness and bottled with 75 ppm sulfur.
Throw this Malbec in the fridge for 30 minutes before popping it open.
