Sandro Fay "Carteria" Valtellina Superiore Valgella Riserva 2019
This ethereal expression of Nebbiolo (also called Chiavennasca) opens with rich density and ripe fruit intensity. Primary hints of rose and violet are combined with evolved but delicate nuances of sweet spices, tobacco and cocoa in a soft, clean and full-bodied taste, with an energetic and persistent freshness. Pretty tones of cola, dried ginger and licorice round out the back and the wine is fresh and well-structured overall with firm, drying tannins.
100% Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) from Lombardy (Italy). Grapes from the Cà Moréi vineyard, 550 meters above sea level, with southern exposure, on sandy and loamy soils. Macerated seven days on the skins, fermentated in steel, refined 12 months in barrique, then aged 18 months in bottles.
The Carterìa vineyard covers an area of three hectares in the Valgella sub-zone at 500 meters; the name stems from the name of a small hamlet of the commune of Teglio, where the Fay family has always owned some plots of land. The winery has started incorporating this land into its estate and replanting of the vines is in progress.
