Castel Pujol "Folklore" Tinto 2025
Castel Pujol "Folklore" Tinto is an expressive wine from the remote Cerro Chapeu region, located along Uruguay's northern border with Brazil. A blend composed predominantly of Tannat (80%), with the rare addition of Petit Manseng (20%), this wine brings together the lush black fruit character and structured tannins of Tannat with a distinctive brightness from Petit Manseng, which adds subtle citrus and floral nuances. The wine is deep ruby in the glass, with aromas of fig, leather and coffee. The palate is smooth and spicy, with plum, blueberry, raisin, tobacco and black pepper joined by orange peel notes provided by the Petit Manseng skins riding through a supple, flavorful finish.
The hand-harvested grapes are grown from single vineyard source with 30 year old vines, dry farmed in deep, sandy red soils of alluvial origin, derived from volcanic materials washed down over millions of years to form iron-rich sediment characterized by great depth and excellent drainage. Tannat bunches are destemmed over the tanks and combined with skins from the first press of Petit Manseng grapes. Fermented with native yeast in stainless still tanks with pump-overs twice a day for six days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in older used barrels, where it is rested a few months for natural clarification. Bottled with nominal So2. Unfiltered. Vegan.
This wine has received more awards than any other wine from the region: the 2021 vintage was awarded Silver Medal from the The TEXSOM International Wine Awards, and the 2023 vintage was awarded by the International Wine Challenge.
Bodega Cerro Chapeu was launched in 1975 by the Carrau family of Cerro Chapeu after starting one of the first vineyard reconversions in the country. The vineyards are located in the red, deep and sand soils of Cerro Chapeu, on the border line between Uruguay and Brazil. Their philosophy is low intervention winemaking in balance with the environment.
The gravity-based winery was built within a hill in 1997, and by combining innovative oenological techniques with the family experience that characterizes Cerro Chapeu, the result is truly unique wine. The Castel Pujol "Folklore" line aims to continue that innovation through alternative vinification methods applied to various grapes sourced from the Cerro Chapeu vineyards.
