This beer features an heirloom grain variety named Haná that was originally used by Josef Groll to brew the world’s first Pilsner in 1842, in the city of Pilsen (present day Czechia). Brought back from near extinction by British farmers in 2015, it's sourced from one of the only fields in the world where it can be found today, in Norfolk, England. Presented as a Pilsner style lager, this heritage barley brings aromatic notes of fresh wholegrain bread, nori and dried spearmint, along with a long, fresh finish.

Hanabi Lager Co.'s Haná Pilsner is the rhythm section of their brewery and is produced year-round. It represents the core of their house approach and style.

Reflecting an inclination toward the uncommon arts, Hanabi Lager Co. brings a winemaker’s agricultural perspective to brewing beers that reflect the place where human artistry intersects with nature.

And what’s in a name? Why Hanabi Lager? Among his peculiar passions, at age 12, Hanabi brewmaster Nick Gislason became an apprentice to a lifelong master fireworks builder and practitioner of traditional Japanese-style fireworks (hanabi) displays. Still deeply involved in the craft, today, Nick designs and directs one of the biggest Japanese-style displays in North America, which annually takes place on Lopez Island, Washington. Every year, we make the pilgrimage north to help bring this show to life.

The Japanese "hanabi" aesthetic has always resonated with Nick. Carrying a very different connotation than fireworks do in the United States, there they evoke a deep cultural respect for the craft, and are named after natural phenomena such and flowers, trees, weather and the cycles of life that they are meant to symbolize.
