K Vintners is a renowned, Rhone-centric winery located in Walla Walla, Washington, founded in 2001 by self-taught winemaker Charles Smith. Famous for its iconic black "K" label, the winery began with just 330 cases of 1999 Syrah sold out of an old van. Smith avoids artificial chemicals and adjuncts both in the vineyard and during the cellar process, relies exclusively on natural, native yeasts rather than commercial inoculants, and believes in patience and time aging as core foundational elements to naturally build texture, depth and character instead of chemical manipulation.

Smith advocates for total transparency and minimal intervention, arguing that wine should contain only grapes and minimal sulfites rather than the dozens of hidden commercial additives currently permitted by law. He also publicly calls for listing wine ingredients on labels and pushes back against hidden industry shortcuts, believing consumers deserve to know what they drink to avoid potential allergens or sensitivities.
