Luis Pato Baga Touriga Nacional 2025
This medium-bodied red opens with vibrant aromas of raspberry, blackberry and black cherry layered with violet, cocoa and a hint of woodsmoke. Juicy red and dark fruit flavors mingle with brambly earth and bitter chocolate, while bright acidity and firm yet supple tannins bring structure and balance. The finish is long, clean and persistent with the balance to reward several years in the cellar.
A blend of roughly equal parts Baga and Touriga Nacional, this wine brings together two distinctive Portuguese varieties: Baga, known for its firm structure and lively acidity, and Touriga Nacional, which contributes floral aromatics, ripe fruit and rounder tannins. Sourced from the Atlantic-influenced vineyards of Bairrada in Portugal’s Beira Atlântico region, the grapes are hand-harvested and farmed using sustainable, environmentally respectful practices. Fermented with native yeasts and vinified in stainless steel, the wine receives a brief passage in used wood that adds a subtle smoky accent without overshadowing the fruit.
Luís Pato is one of Portugal’s most influential winemakers and a pioneering champion of Bairrada and its native Baga grape. Often called the “King of Bairrada,” he has helped bring the region’s distinctive wines to international attention through a thoughtful balance of tradition, innovation and minimal intervention. His work celebrates the character of local varieties and the unique expression of their terroir, continuing a legacy of Portuguese winemaking that his daughter, Filipa Pato, carries forward in her own acclaimed wines.
