Murgo Etna Rosso DOC 2022

The Murgo Etna Rosso 2022 is a classic, volcanic red wine from Sicily, Italy. Light red with aromas of redcurrant, wild strawberry, red cherry, orange peel, sage, wet stone, subtle spice, ash and smoke. Light to medium-bodied, fresh, bright and juicy with brisk acidity, fine-grained tannins and a mineral-driven finish. Savoury, harmonious and elegant with good persistence and intensity. Notes of cherry, tobacco, black pepper and cloves, balanced by a slightly green edge that adds lift and structure.

This wine is closely tied to the tradition and terroir of Etna. 100% Nerello Mascalese from 30+ year old vines. The fruit is harvested by hand and fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel. 6,000 cases produced annually. First bottled by Murgo in 1982, Etna Rosso remains the company's flagship product to this day.

The Scammacca del Murgo family is one of the few winemaking families who can claim long, deep Etna roots, longer than even some of the older Nerello Mascalese vines. For more than 100 years, this family has cared for olive and fruit trees, crafted fine olive oils and jams, and nurtured indigenous grapes under Etna’s looming shadow. Yet it was only in 1980 that the baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo transformed the farm into a modern agricultural estate. After a long and illustrious career as a diplomat with important postings as Italy’s ambassador to the Vatican, Brussels and Moscow, as well as Assistant Secretary of State in Italy’s Foreign office, the baron came home to focus on his ancestral lands with the help of his eight sons, who are all involved in the family business.

Currently Murgo’s 30 hectares of vineyards are located on three farms: San Michele in Santa Venerina, Gelso Bianco near Catania and La Francescana in Aprilia. Farming is done sustainably with the goal of producing pleasing wines inextricable from their terroir with the lowest possible environmental impact.
