Occhipinti "Siccagno" Nero D'Avola Sicilia DOC 2022
With a concentrated ruby red color with purple reflections, "Siccagno" entices with a wide, mediterranean bouquet of beautiful intensity, with an earthy, darkly floral aromas that blend spiced blackberries, crushed rocks, savory herbs, blueberry, leather, scorched earth and nuances of fresh tobacco. It coasts across the palate with ease, soft and round, elegant, warm and fresh at the same time, yet a zesty core of citrus‑tinged acidity and minerals add tension toward the close. The finish is long and pleasantly tart, with hints of tangerine, sour cherry, chocolate and graphite. A masterclass of balance and expressiveness.
100% Nero d'Avola from multiple certified-organic parcels with vines averaging 35 years old, planted on red-sandy, limestone soils and trained in alberello and guyot. The bunches are hand-harvested and destemmed with the berries left whole. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in 20-hectoliter concrete tanks and with approximately 30 days of maceration and only gentle extraction. The wine is aged for 22 months in 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak botti and is bottled without fining or filtration. Sulfur use is minimal.
Winemaker Arianna Occhipinti is the niece of Guisto Occhipinti whose COS wines have been stuff of legend in Sicily. Following her uncle's footsteps, Arianna makes some of the best wine in the area, arguably in all of Italy. The "natural woman" of Italian wine, Occhipinti started this fantastic project in 2004, after finishing her studies as a winemaker in Milan, applying biodynamic farming principles since the very beginning for a more eco-conscious and authentic approach to local grape varietals. "Siccagno" is her interpretation of Nero D’Avola and it represents the enchanting land where it is produced: wild, intense, gentle, passionate, warm and full of contrasts.
As one of the most influential voices in the natural wine movement, Arianna has brought the Sicilian grape varieties to new heights. Her wines reflect the subtle nuances of the various terroirs. Occhipinti stands for a scientifically sound, yet natural approach that characterises the wine world far beyond Sicily.
