Paitin "Starda" Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2023
Dried cherry and wild strawberry on the nose, with a pleasant mushroomy edge to the fruit. The palate shows bright, macerated cherry and berry flavors, followed by a subtle dusting of nutmeg. Medium-bodied with a tight bead of nebbiolo fruit riding the fine, silky tannins. Finishes tight and firm.
Starda is the name of an ancient family of notaries, after which a farmhouse and a narrow road running along the base of Serraboella were named. The soils at the foot of Serraboella, being sandier and cooler, yield Nebbiolos with softer tannins and exceptional class. For several years now, Starda has incorporated not only the Nebbiolo grapes from Serraboella but also those from the sandstone-rich soils of Ca Veja in Alba, another of Paitin's magnificent vineyards.
Farmed organically, with minimal use of a natural sulphur and copper compound, harvested exclusively by hand. The grapes are all pressed and destemmed, fermented and macerated from three to six weeks in stainless steel, then transferred to wood barrels at the end of winter, and aged 6-12 months.
Paitin can trace their first bottle of Langhe Nebbiolo to 1893, when they produced their first Barbaresco. The name Starda was first used on a label in 2013 to distinguish it from the Nebbiolo sourced from Ca Veja.
