Teutonic "Candied Mushrooom" Riesling 2024
This Riesling is Teutonic's flagship, their raison d’êtr. They call it the “Umami Tsunami,” and for good reason. Inspired by David Chang’s concept of umami, this wine delivers a deep, savory richness that lingers long after tasting. This wine has earned a cult following, and like any cult favorite, it lives in unlimited spaces of imagination. Some believe it’s the best made Riesling from Oregon.
Not easily classified or described, the grapes used to make this wine come from the winemakers' oldest and dearest vineyard collaborators, Crow Valley. The grapes see extended contact with both the skins and a little botrytis, also known as "noble rot," formed by a precise interplay of rain, mist, humidity and warmth. The shriveled, honeyed berries may look rough, but they concentrate juice and flavor into something extraordinary. The resulting wine is an incredible balance of all of the basic food tastes: sweet, salty, sour and umami. Pair with umami-rich foods and get ready for greatness. It is a wine built for aging, though equally beguiling when enjoyed young. Only 392 cases produced.
Teutonic Wine Company was founded by Barnaby and Olga Tuttle in 2005. While their wines are inspired by the wines of the Middle-Mosel Valley in Germany and Alsace in France, they are a celebration of Oregon. Barnaby and Olga work with cool climate growing sites and are focused on quality farming as well as minimal intervention in both the vineyard and winery.
In the cellar, they embrace a minimalist intervention philosophy and ferment strictly with indigenous yeast native to each vineyard. The wines can be summed up by: "Old & Cold, High & Dry, Wood & Wild" - Old vine and cold climate, High elevation and Dry farmed, Neutral oak and Wild fermentation.
