Willems-Willems "Auf Der Lauer" Oberemmel Riesling 2021
This is Willems-Willems' "fun Riesling" — playful and elegant, an impressive dry Riesling that combines licorice and sage character with alluring notes of crisp pear, kiwi, orange and slate, and a fresh, mouthwatering acidity on the medium-bodied palate. It remains focusted with lots of herbal and mineral freshness at the very clean, lively finish. Sweetness rated as "Feinherb," meaning somewhere between dry and off-dry.
The name is a nod to the original name of the walled vineyard, "Auf der Mauer" ('On the Wall'), planted with vines up to 55 years old. Another winemaker had already patented that name, so Willems-Willems shortened it to "Auf der Lauer" (from a German children's song).
Willems-Willems in Oberemmel has a history spanning five generations of women managing the estate. Originally a mixed-crop farm, it transitioned to a dedicated wine-growing estate in 1971, when Maria Willems married Karl Willems. The two shared a distant ancestor and thus the same last name, and so Willems became Willems-Willems, a name still proudly in use today. Maria’s daughter Carolin Hofmann and her husband Jürgen now lead the winery, emphasizing high-quality dry and semi-dry Rieslings. Sustainable practices are certified through Ecovin.
