Coquelicot Estate Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2024
Coquelicot Estate Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is glass—bright, herbaceous and alive, leading with aromas of dried lemon-skin, wet stone and muddy earth. There is compelling tension to the sip, as lime-rind and sea salt notes evoke margarita, with tropical flavors of vibrant grapefruit-skin, passion fruit, crisp green apple and fresh pineapple, followed by a clean mineral finish.
The Coquelicot Vineyard sits just outside of Solvang in the Los Olivos District of Santa Ynez Valley AVA. The valley starts as a narrow, foggy river course between steep east–west hills that run inland from the Pacific shore at Lompoc as far as Solvang. Here the main valley is joined by tributary canyons from the north, which are warmer because they are sheltered from sea fogs. This site was planted in the mid-1990s on gravely riverbed soils. The vineyard uses certified organic and sustainable farming methods without synthetic chemicals.
This wine is hand-made, limited-production and crafted with minimal intervention using gentle techniques. The grapes are harvested by hand, foot trodden and soaked on skins overnight before being gently pressed in a bladder press. The juice was fermented outside with native yeast in neutral French oak barrels and aged on lees for eight months before its first racking to blend before bottling, unfined and unfiltered.
Coquelicot (ko-klee-ko) is the name “en Français” of the striking red poppy flower that graces the French countryside, as well as all the labels on the estate's wines.
