Il Grappolo "Sassocheto" Brunello di Montalcino 2019

Refined and complex, with a fiery flavor, "Sassocheto" is the pinnacle of Il Grappolo's Brunello production. It is a wine with a strong identity. Honest and authentic, structured and complex, it is simultaneously lively and enjoyable on the palate and extraordinarily inviting on the nose, with a pleasant aromatic persistence. 2019 was a fantastic vintage full of precise fruit character and aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather, underbrush and dried flowers. Structured and savory, with star anise and tobacco alongside fine tannins and fresh acidity.

"Sassocheto" translates to the “little stone,” a reference to the rocky soils of the Piano Nero vineyard, where the grapes were grown on 20-30 year old vines with sustainable farming practices, using only organic fertilizers, no herbicides, and only copper and sulfur used instead of fungicides, except in extreme conditions. Legumes are planted in the fall for soil health.

"Sassocheto" is made from the first choice of grapes, the result of selective harvests carried out exclusively by hand. Fermentation takes place in open, conical vats with native yeast and temperature control for three weeks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French and Slavonian oak barrels for over 25 months, finally aging in bottle for approximately six months. "Sassocheto" is the result of a great love for the land and extensive experience in the cellar.
