Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2022
A dark, deep red, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino sees a portion of barrique for its aging and is ripe with aromas of black cherries, violets, sweet herbs, dusty earth, incense and rose. It's cool-toned and lifted in feel, with soft textures and notes of ripe violet-laced red berry fruits, Morello cherry, oregano, balsamic and red tea. Medium to full-bodied, plush on the palate, with ripe tannins and a clean, iron-rich, mineral finish. Warming and generous, with a polished, velvety aftertaste.
Il Poggione is one of the highest regarded producers of Brunello di Montalcino. They are known for their rich history and stylistic consistency. This younger, more accessible version of Brunello is already very well-developed with a strong character making Rosso di Montalcino a very important wine for Tenuta Il Poggione.
Produced entirely from Sangiovese grapes sourced in the estate's younger vineyards, Rosso di Montalcino is aged in large casks and barriques before a period of bottle aging. The wood aging, although not obligatory for the production of Rosso di Montalcino, tones down the tannins typical of a young Sangiovese and gives this red wine a complexity of aroma and structure that make it a great "Young Brunello".
Harvested by hand and fermented 15 days in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts at a controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. Aged in large French oak barrels (30 - 50 hl or 872 -1373 Gallon) and barriques (350 litres - 92 Gallon) followed by bottle aging.
Il Poggione was one of the first wineries to market the Brunello di Montalcino wine as early as the 1900s, and one of the founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium.
