Katharina Gessl "Spompanadeln" Weiss 2023
"A crazy experiment that somehow worked" - this is how Katharina Gessl describes Spompanadeln Weiss, a natural wine she crafts from Grüner Veltliner, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Riesling grapes in the Weinviertel region of Austria. With youthful aromas of citrus, stone fruits and mineral, the wine tastes of fun and freedom, but also of melon, pear, vanilla yogurt and crushed stones.
When asked what her wines are like and how they should taste, Katharina says she always has the following running through her head: the wines should reflect the relief of seeing familiar faces at an event, the joy of solving a brain-teasing puzzle and learning something new. In Austria, that would be the euphoria of a traditional gstanzl sung by a local choir in a heurige tavern after the third glass of wine at sunset… the “mhhhhm” at the first bite of bread and butter… a midnight dance alone at home… the tingling sensation of a message from your beloved… the feeling of happiness when the first refreshing sip of wine dances across your tongue. They are light on their feet but always strong in character, so that you want to spend an entire evening with them, enthralled, and then want to meet up with them again! Something like that.
